Black Womens Expo Recap: How to be a boss in heels

Social media makes entrepreneurship seem glamorous and easy, but that’s far from the truth. Entrepreneurship is a journey, and I was invited to cover the Bosses In Heels: Black Women In Media & Entrepreneurship session at the 2018 Black Women’s Expo in Chicago.

This session included discussion on the barriers African American women face within the media industry and how aspiring women can succeed in this popular yet male dominated industries. Serving major gems during this panel were Cynthia Johnson, Vice President, Urban Promotion at Columbia Records, Zondra Hughes of Six Brown Chicks, Brooke Mackie of Mackie Firm Management, and Frankie Robinson, On Air Personality for WGCI 107.5 FM.

“I just love sisterhood because I just appreciate what we bring to the table, even if it’s different from what I bring.” -Cynthia Johnson

The session covered each of the bosses’ stories of how they got to where they were in their respective areas of the media industry, from radio to multimedia, promotions and music. What I  could appreciate is that they were not holding the audience’s hands; they challenged us to step up, work hard and not take no for an answer when it comes to going after our career goals.

The ladies in the session also included faith in their journey, which was so refreshing to me and I’m sure many others in the session.

“When God shows it to you, He’ll give it to you so plain, it’s undeniable. And it will be so sweet. Just do the work.” -Frankie Robinson

Several of the ladies noted trusting God in the process of becoming successful. With purpose, God’s direction and tenacity, you too can become a boss in heels in whatever area you want to dominate.

Many thanks to Black Bloggers United Chicago for allowing me to serve as media and cover this session. If you missed the Black Women’s Expo in Chicago, they will be touring the country this year, making stops in Atlanta and Dallas this year.
